In accordance with UCCS’s regularly scheduled required emergency drills (fire drills in the fall and lockdown drills in the spring), UCCS Police will be conducting a campuswide lockdown drill on the afternoon of March 4. The lockdown drill is designed to evaluate UCCS emergency preparedness for an active threat.
The drill will be observed by the University Police and Department of Public Safety, building Floor Liaisons, and Safety staff. The Colorado Springs Police Department and Fire Department may have a presence throughout the campus during this drill. There will not be a police response to classrooms during the drill. This is an opportunity to evaluate the training that has been delivered across campus for Run, Hide, Fight.
Information about the planned drill and any updates will be posted on our Alerts web page https://alerts.uccs.edu/. There are also Frequently Asked Questions on the Alerts page.
Anyone experiencing an adverse reaction initiated by a stressful event (i.e. – seizures, emotional reactions, etc.) may depart the building prior to the scheduled lockdown drill.
Things to review before the drill:
- Have you added the 67283 and 22678 to the numbers on your phone which will bypass your “Do Not Disturb”? This will allow the alert notifications to come through even if you have “do not disturb” on.
- Did you receive both the text and email for the RAVE test on February 18? If not, please go to Public Safety Communications at UCCS on the alerts.uccs.edu website for corrective actions to ensure you are receiving these notifications.
- Review specific expected actions depending upon the type of notification. These are available at https://alerts.uccs.edu/emergency-actions-and-steps-to-take/
An Alert message will be sent via the following methods to identify the start of the drill:
- Text
- Message on UCCS computers
- Digital billboards
Here is what we ask you to do:
- Stop what you are doing immediately.
- Students – Move away from sight. Maintain silence. Prepare to evade or defend.
- Staff – Lock interior doors. Turn out the lights. Move away from sight. Do not open the door.
- Maintain silence. Prepare to evade or defend.
- Persons with access and functional needs should be assisted to a safe location, if possible.
While UCCS has adopted the “Run, Hide, Fight” approach for active threat situations, this drill is specifically focused on the “HIDE” component by practicing lockdown procedures. Faculty, staff, and students should take this opportunity to familiarize themselves with their surroundings, ensure they know how to secure their space, and practice remaining quiet and out of sight during a lockdown.
A “Lockdown Complete” message will be delivered with a survey link. Please complete the survey. https://surveyuccs.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_barJSqGgxg7sHgW
