From Loss to Learning: When Pain Becomes Purpose

Jim Schmidt, stepfather of Gabby Petito, is visiting UCCS to share his perspective as a parent and as a longtime firefighter and EMT. Drawing from more than two decades responding to emergencies and his family’s experience after Gabby’s death, Jim offers a powerful look at trauma, domestic violence and what professionals can learn when lives intersect with crisis. The presentation includes an interactive discussion exploring the neurobiology of trauma and the lasting impact violence has on victims, families and responders. This is a rare opportunity to hear from someone turning personal tragedy into a mission of education, prevention and awareness. This event is free for UCCS students, faculty and staff, but registration is required. Members of the community are welcome to attend and can purchase tickets here.
