Beyond the already-expansive options of golf courses to choose from within the nation for their requisite internships, students in the PGA Golf Management program are finding opportunities abroad.
Three UCCS PGA Golf Management students will pursue theirs internationally this year, with two joining the team at The Grove in England, which resides on a sprawling historic estate near London, and one going to Old Head in Ireland, where the course is carefully laid out in harmony with the region’s impressive cliffs.
“Over the course of sixteen months, students gain incredible hands-on experience, exploring all areas of the golf industry across the United States,” said Jon Husby, Principal Program and Internship Coordinator of PGA Golf Management. “This summer, we’re especially excited to see three students take their internships international, and we look forward to expanding these opportunities even further in the future.”
PGA Golf Management students are required to have sixteen months of practicum experience for the program, which can consist of multiple internships over their college career. Though most at UCCS have stayed within the U.S. for theirs, with very few traveling internationally in the past decade, students still have a significant range of options between the nation’s differing regions, from the tropical climates of the Florida Keys in the southeast to the northwest coasts of Oregon, and have the opportunity to explore several aspects of golf management at them.
“The students are fully involved in all of the golf operations,” Husby said. “So teaching, tournaments, merchandising, running events, maintenance – there’s so many different facets they can go into. They go to Montana, Florida, New York, Boston and all these amazing places, some of which have the top golf courses in the country.”
