Cafe Scientifique | Old Texts, New Worlds: Uncovering lost texts with multispectral imaging

  • Old scrolls and parchments can hide monumental insights—if only we can decipher their ghostly traces. Learn how researchers harness the magic of multiple light wavelengths and full spectrum cameras to expose the hidden or missing words behind the wear. This talk reveals how cutting-edge imaging transforms the barely legible into a treasure trove of long-lost tales. Our first speaker, Dr. Helen Davies, will present her truly innovative work using technology typically associated with satellite imaging to reveal writings from the 12th and 13th centuries, that are not visible to the eye.

International Affairs Book Club

  • We will read one book during the spring semester, and meet once a month to discuss the book and hang out with other International Students. We will provide the books, and free snacks and beverages at the meetings!   • We are excited to announce that the KFL 3rd Digital Curation Exhibition, “Conversations about Islam and the West,” will be relocated to a new space by the library’s 2nd floor Apse. This exhibition explores the rich and complex interactions between Islamic and Western cultures through a variety of digital media. To celebrate this relocation, we are hosting a reopening event.   • Join us to learn from ethics fellow Dr. Armin Moin, Director of the QAS (Quantum-Classical AI and Software Engineering) Lab and Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Computer Science in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. AI is increasingly becoming an essential tool and a key element of competitiveness in almost every domain. However, nearly everywhere, it is a double-edged sword. This raises some key questions, concerns, and dilemmas, which may not be easy to understand and judge. In this talk, we want to discuss several illustrative cases that we may face in our daily lives, including in teaching and research in academia, and look at them from the lens of ethical principles. ETHOS V: Ways of the Wind

  • ETHOS V: Ways of the Wind is a work-in-progress, outdoor installation performance combining storytelling, dance, and music on the land around the Heller Center to honor Tava-kaavi, Sun Mountain in Ute. Seeking out a path of decolonization and healing of the land, the reflective movement project will be led by Heller Fellow and dance artist Ayako Kato in collaboration with music faculty Yvonne Wu and Élise Roy; ‘Ilaheva Tua’one, Assistant Professor of Indigenous/Native American Studies and Storytelling Professor; and UCCS students of NASA (the Native American Student Alliance). Ayako Kato is a kinetic philosopher/poet and contemporary choreographer/dancer originally from Yokohama, Japan. Learn more and register for this free event here!

ELECTROWAVE: The Rocky Mountain Electronic Music Festival

  • ELECTROWAVE, the Rocky Mountain Electronic Music Festival, is a weekend celebration of electronic music, electronic musical instruments and above all performers, composers and facilitators of electronic and electroacoustic music. The festival features a series of concerts, installations, talks, workshops and presentations, gathering together a broad spectrum of experimental music-makers from across the Rocky Mountains and beyond to perform, share, experience and discuss the many vibrant trends in electronic music performance today. ELECTROWAVE 2025 includes a Synthesizer Petting Zoo, improvised laptop performances, electronic instrumental ensembles, a selection of modular synth video works, electronic works involving live performers, sound installations, an outdoor Soundwalk and more.
